This might still be a long shot, but I was in a lapidary store a few
years ago, and some of their books described how to do this kind of art
(landscapes rather than portraits, and on a small scale using amethyst,
etc., but I expect the process would be similar). If there are any
lapidary/jewelry supply shops and/or associations in your area, they
might be able to help you track down the artist.

Good luck!

Hi Folks,

I know this is a long-shot, but I'm in search of information on a piece
of art
that we recently found in our collection. The piece is a large flat
stone
portrait of George Meany made of different colors of stone (the style
is
similar to paint by numbers with large areas of a single color rather
than
smaller individual mosaic tiles). The piece is signed "S. Toker"
(although the
middle letter of Toker may be some letter other than "k," it was hard
to tell.
So far I have not turned up any information on either the artist or
this type
of art. If anyone has any ideas on where I could seek further
information, I
would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks,
Catherine Dean
