Heck,

Being new to this list, I tend to sit back and see what is happening. But on this one, and being a Civil War buff, I have to say that there is a lot in a small area in the Virginia/Maryland/Washington, D.C. area. 

You have Civil War battlefields (National Park Service has museums and such -- all with small collections) and in the Richmond area you have the Confederate White House and Museum and Pamplin Park -- both of which have all types of exhibits and collections, some hands on.

There are a couple of Black American-type museums taking shape -- one in Washington, D.C., and one in Richmond, VA., I believe. Both of those are developing their exhibits and can possible give you some insight on all of your questions from a unique perspective.
