With the help of a high school intern, our small historical society has
just begun to create a database of files on the items in our collection.
With each item that we enter, we are adding a scan or digital image of the
item, with the consideration that sometime in the future we may be able to
make this collection available online. In light of that, I am exploring how
to protect the images, so that they are not used for purposes that would be
antagonistic to our mission. I have uncovered at least eleven methods, with
varying degrees of sophistication. I have also learned that there seems to
be no completely foolproof way to prevent the "borrowing" of your image --
and I don't think we are even going to be any more stringent than to ask
that credit be given to us.
I am also using the topic for the subject of a paper for a museum studies
class in which I am currently enrolled. For guidance with both the paper
and our museum, may I ask any list members whose museum or organization has
an online collection to please tell me whether any measures whatsoever have
been taken to prevent unauthorized use of those online images.
   Many thanks
Lynne
