Marsha Semmel Named Special Assistant for Strategic Partnerships
WASHINGTON, DC--Dr. Robert Martin, Director of the Institute of Museum and
Library Services, is pleased to announce the appointment of Marsha L. Semmel
as Special Assistant for Strategic Partnerships.
"We are delighted to have a museum professional and public administrator
with Ms. Semmel's experience and stature joining our team at IMLS," said
Martin. "One of our primary goals is to build and strengthen collaborative
efforts with other government agencies, with foundations, and with other
sponsors with whom we share common activities and interests. Ms. Semmel is
superbly qualified to lead our efforts in that important area."
Marsha Semmel comes to the Institute of Museum and Library Services with a
wealth of experience as a museum professional and grants administrator. She
has served as President and CEO of the Women of the West Museum in Denver,
CO, since 1999. Prior to that she was President and CEO of Conner Prairie in
Fishers, IN. From 1984 through 1996 she was on the staff of the National
Endowment for the Humanities, serving in a number of roles in the Division
of Public Programs, including Program Officer, Assistant Director and
Director. She is active in museum professional service organizations and has
made numerous presentations at professional and scholarly conferences. She
has lectured at several institutions of higher education on such topics as
museum education and governance, humanities scholarship in museums, and
federal funding programs.
"I am thrilled to join the IMLS staff. The agency serves an indispensable
role in strengthening the public education infrastructure in museums and
libraries. I look forward to fostering stronger and more effective
partnership between IMLS and other partners," Ms. Semmel remarked.
Ms. Semmel has an A.B. in Art History from the University of Michigan and an
M.A. in Art History from the University of Cincinnatti.
