Now this brings a question to mind- if some museum workers are union, what type of union is it? I haveheard rumours for years that museum workers might start a union in the United States, but I have never heard of it. I do think that this whole idea of servitude is seated in the old ideology of museums (i.e. almost a sort of an apprentice-type situation where the museum worker starts at the bottom, and works their way up, so to speak). I have heard this debate for years, and still there is no solution. However, I do think that the American Association of Museums should address this. Does anyone know of any articles or studies the AAM has conducted on this subject? Another point is: how much are students informed of the job-seeking situation in museum work when the students initially inquire or start their studies in this field? I had no idea myself, and was in for a rude awakening when I overheard my lecturers talking about the ethics of sending out all of these museum studies graduates into a field where the chance of a job was so slim. That was my first clue. I am wondering if universities are honest with students about this? Does anyone have any experiences with this type of disclosure?
