How we get around determines, to a large extent what kind of people we are,
our sense of time and space, our relationship to the elements and to animal
life, and our sense of our place in the universe. NAVIGATION: Finding Your
Way, is a hands-on exhibition, built by the San Francisco Exploratorium, that
displays cultural and historical artifacts, videos, maps, photographs, and
unusual artworks that capture the richness and variety of human navigation.
The underlying theme of this exhibition is that we are all navigators. We
begin the crucial task of finding our way as infants, and continue to develop
complex wayfinding skills for the rest of our lives--usually without giving
the matter much conscious thought. The task of an urban driver negotiating
city streets, or an Eskimo returning home from a hunt on snow-covered tundra,
is far from trivial. All people find their way using the built-in tools of
seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, thinking, and remembering. The native
peoples of North America, the Pacific Islands, and Australia find their way
highly effectively without the use of tools beyond their own bodies. In the
western world we have extended and enhanced our senses and, with magnetic
compasses and electronic navigation, developed new modes of perception.

NAVIGATION consists of 20 exhibits with sections on Getting Lost, Sensing
Your Way, Navigation By The Stars, Navigating With Tools, Maps, Map Wall, and
Finding Their Way.

This traveling exhibition will be available for sale at the end of Summer
2003. Please call Jackie Venegas at (415) 353-0445 or email at
