Curator of Exhibitions, University Museums, University of Richmond, Virginia

The University of Richmond is a private, highly selective university with a
rising national and international profile. A small but multifaceted
institution consistently ranked one of the the nation's top universities by
U.S. News & World Report and other college guides, the university is noted
for its challenging academic programs, excellent facilities, commitment to
undergraduate education, and strong resource base, including an endowment
exceeding $1 billion. An ambitious 10-year strategic plan provides a strong
sense of momentum for the future. Richmond has full-time enrollment of
approximately 3,400 in schools of arts and sciences, business, law, and
leadership studies. In addition, the university enrolls approximately 1,300
part-time students through a school of continuing studies. Over 90 percent
of the full-time undergraduates live on campus, about 50 percent
participate in the university's international programs, more than half are
involved in internships, and two-thirds participate in community service.
Located just two hours south of Washington, DC, Richmond has a population
of 1 million, and as state capital, is home to numerous cultural and civic
organizations. The university's campus, recently named the most beautiful
in the nation by The Princeton Review, is located six miles west of
downtown and offers an extraordinary quality of life for our faculty,
staff, and students.
        The University is seeking an experienced curator to be part of its
University Museums, which includes the Marsh Art Gallery, the Harnett Print
Study Center, and the Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature. As curator
of exhibitions, this person must have curatorial experience in the natural
sciences or related objects along with an understanding of the fine arts,
decorative arts, and cultural artifacts that comprise the collections and
missions of the university museums.
        As curator, primary responsibilities will be organizing exhibitions
and public programs, researching and developing installations of the
permanent collection, and cultivating collectors in the natural sciences
and the visual arts. Duties include exhibition and program planning,
resource and donor development, fundraising and grantwriting, developing
and overseeing exhibition and project budgets, participating in educational
programs, and representing the museums and the University to scholarly and
academic communities as well as the general public. Along with exhibitions,
the curator's other responsibilities include acquisitions, cataloguing,
publications, care of collections, and supervising student research and
student workers. Reports to the Executive Director, and as part of the
museums' senior administration this person will be involved in overall
programming and development of the University Museums.
        Qualifications include at least four years of relevant museum
experience and an advanced degree in museum studies, natural sciences
(preferably with an interest in minerology or related areas), fine arts, or
related field. Should be an effective communicator, able to work with a
variety of constitutencies both within (including students, faculty, and
staff) and beyond the university community. Computer skills necessary, and
familiarity with collections database and website presentation desirable.
Must enjoy collaborative approach and working in a university environment,
must have good public communication skills and strong interpersonal and
organizational ability.
