I haven't really been following the thread on this topic, but I do have a
bit to contribute.

My initial reaction to the sculpture was similar to many. It's art, and
not in bad taste, but poor timinng to be sure.

Then I reflected upon it further.


The attack on the World Trade Center was a horrific thing. Arguably one of
the worst things that has happened to the United States in our history. It
is an event of many tragedies, both small and large. Personal pain and
sorrow will never be diminished from those that suffered and lost on that
day.

But what I fear most is that we forget the larger picture. That the attack
was a statement against the United States, a warning as it were. And we
run the risk of forgetting that warning. That things are NOT the same as
they were before. (Going along with that, people that follow the world
news realize that the attack was NOT just out of the blue...).

Something as controversial and something that causes such pain and keeps
our emotions alive...might not be a bad thing. We can't forget about
9/11...we can't forget the bigger picture. And a moving and difficult
piece such as that may just be the ticket. This is not something that we
can wait 50 years to reflect upon. America has changed, and we need to
accept it, learn from it, and move forward. We need to be mentally jolted.

And with that, I offer my deepest sympathies to those who lost on that
day. May I never suffer the pain that you have, and I will not pretend to
understand what you are feeling/going through.
