I am not a lawyer.  You are going to need one.  Copyright law keeps changing.

First of all, it is my understanding that no recordings are in the public domain.  You *will* need to pay performance royalties.  If you have an
ASCAP (or BMI) lisence, check the wording on that.  If not, then you'll probably have to go to the appropriate lisencing agency.

If you're seeking a special-use lisence (say, for short-term use), you may need to contact the artists' agents.

Before doing anything, try contacting the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame or the Experience Music Project.  I'm sure they would be able to give you
some good advice.
