We are open 7 days per week for an enormous number of hours (M-F 9am-10pm,
Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 12n-6pm). Heavy maintenance is done Sun-Thur 10pm-midnight
when nobody is there; light maintenance 4pm-10pm daily. We tried using
early hours for maintenance tasks but they don't work as well as late-night
hours given the staff we have and the type of traffic we experience--often
they can't finish early maintenance tasks in time. We also have 3 months
during the year (most of May, all of August and then 2nd half of December)
where we don't have classes and we close at 6pm M-F so we can do annual
maintenance tasks (massive floor strippings/waxings, wall repaintings,
studio equipment upgrades, etc.) after hours. Exhibition installations are
done during the day but we have doors we can close to avoid disturbing
visitors. One gallery is pretty open, though, and we just try to change it
over really quickly and keep it neat and pleasant looking (insofar as is
possible!) while it is undergoing installation. We've also been known to
use holidays (such as Labor Day, July 4, etc.) for installation and
maintenance.

Please DO NOT reply straight to this message or to me.

She writes:
"I am doing up a paper on opening the museum 7 days a week. We are currently
closed on Monday for maintenance, and is now proposing to open the museum to
the public on Mondays too. Just wondering if you would have the info below:

* Whether other museums around the world open 7 times a week, and how do
they do their maintenance works especially those maintenance works
which are quite noisy and thus disturbing the visitor's experience to
the museum?

* Do you also have a list/info of other museum opening hours?

* Contacts/e-mail so that I could e-mail to them to find out more info?

Thanks
Mabel Toh, National Heritage Board, Singapore"
