For many governmental organizations audio recordings of board meetings are
kept for six months to a year as a backup until the minutes are officially
approved.  If the accuracy of the minutes were to be challeged the tapes
serve as documentation of what transpired, contents of discussion and
official actions taken.   The board usually will have a policy on the
length of tape retention.
