May 28, 2002 (Washington, DC) The Museum Trustee Association (MTA) has
published the second in its series of Templates for Trustees. The
Leadership Partnership focuses on board and director assessment. The
Template challenges board members and directors to look at activities
analytically so that all aspects of leadership are taken into the mix
systematically and even long-established traditions and familiar patterns
are examined broadly with all perspectives considered. The Leadership
Partnership emphasizes performing assessment regularly as a normal part of
the leadership --and the learning -- routine.

The Leadership Partnership includes four components: the Self-Assessment
which examines individual board members' attitudes, participation, and
contributions; the Board Assessment which examines the board's collective
performance from the perspectives of trustees and the director; the Director
Assessment which is analogous to the Board Assessment, examining the
director's performance from the perspectives of the board and the director;
and the Leadership Plan, a PowerPoint presentation to help identify areas of
strength and weakness, agreement and disagreement and to develop a plan that
balances and strengthens the leadership partnership. The Leadership
Partnership also includes a list of publications and organizations that
provide useful resources on board and director assessment.

Templates for Museum Trustees are software-based tools designed to present
board information so that it can be explored and understood from different
perspectives. Using electronic fill-in-the-blank forms, the Templates help
boards create documents, spreadsheets, reports and presentations tailored to
their own needs. The completed tools help boards organize their thoughts,
identify their priorities, and plan their actions. Each Template has two
supporting components: The "User's Guide" - geared to those who will
facilitate the process and interpret the data; and "Working with the
Templates" - for the staff liaison or board member who will enter the data.
The Templates were developed using Microsoft Office 2000. They are also
compatible with Microsoft Office 97.

Building Museum Boards and The Leadership Partnership are the first two
publications in the Templates for Museum Trustees series. Upcoming
Templates include: Smooth Executive Transitions; and Strategic Thinking and
Planning.  Templates are $50.00 each for MTA members; $60 for AAM members;
and $75 for non-members plus shipping and handling.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services, a Federal agency that fosters
innovation, leadership and a lifetime of learning, supports the Museum
Trustee Association Templates for Trustees.

The Museum Trustee Association, a national non-profit organization founded
in 1986, is dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of museum governance
and leadership. The MTA provides resources, programs and tools that address
the major issues facing museum leaders throughout North America in areas
such as strategy, policy, ethics, inclusion, sustainability and stewardship.
The MTA is located in Washington, D.C.
