==============================================
Join historians, curators, archaeologists, and
historic preservationists to explore the
diverse and dynamic history of the Newport
Historical Society's Wanton-Lyman-Hazard
House, one of the earliest and most important
buildings in Newport. Built around 1675, the
Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House has witnessed over
three centuries of change in the surrounding
landscape and community. Before being
restored and opened to the public in 1927, it
was the home of families large and small, a
colonial governor, enslaved people, a
notorious Tory sympathizer, merchants,
craftsmen, and a pair of spinster sisters.
Learn how preservation experts recently
conducted a second restoration of the house,
and about the Newport Garden Club's plans to
restore its colonial garden. Get the latest
information about the 1765 Newport Stamp Act
Riot, which included an attack upon the house,
and hear about exciting discoveries from
recent archaeological excavations at the
house lot.
