Teri,

This is similar to what Dan is suggesting. How about drawing a
timeline from, say, 1800 - 2000, and marking the major events in U.
S. history (War of 1812, Mexican War, Gold Rush, Civil War, etc.).
Then list several names at one end and ask the children to draw a
line between the years the person lived. Thus, if a person lived
from 1808 until 1863, they could see the person was alive during the
War of 1812, and perhaps remembered the war, and died during the
Civil War (but not because of the war). The person lived to be 65
years old, and would have had memories of every president from James
Madison to Abraham Lincoln.

Another idea would be to pick out several people in the cemetery who
you have photographs of, and make copy photos. Then you could lead
the kids in a group around to the various graves, pass around the
photo of the occupant, and perhaps give a bit of history on each
person you visited. If you had excerpts from a letter or a diary, so
much the better. Anything to make the person come to life
(figuratively speaking, of course.).
