From personal experience at our museum, I believe that it is of the utmost
importance for dissemination of information about your museum (not to
mention eventually selling copies of the book!) to publish books only with
publishers who can guarantee you that your book will have an ISBN number and
that it will be registered with the intermediary companies which provide
Amazon.com with their listings. Yes, there are other book sites out there,
but Amazon.com (and its affiliated sites in a few countries other than the
U.S.) is one of the first places people tend to look. I think it's much
better to publish a smaller book (if extra expenses of the ISBN and
intermediary registration have to be borne), but to be present, than it is
to publish a larger book about which no one ever hears.
Looking forward to hearing what others think.
Best regards, Star Meyer
