I've been twice to the Holocaust museum, never got entirely through the whole
thing and definitely couldn't fathom another museum after (a drink is more
like it).

AMerican UNiverstiy used to (and may still) rent rooms to non-students during
summer so try them too. Otherwise, motels in Arlington may be cheaper than
hotels in the District, (or any other towns along the metro lines in VA or MD)

you most likely have to set a time limit as to how long you can stay

I spent two days in the Holocaust Museum. As a exhibit designer, I thought
it was one of
the most well designed museum on the mall and spent countless hours
studying it. One tidbit that I do not know is possible, here at the
University of Arizona in Tucson, they sometimes will let visitors stay in
the dorms if there are empty rooms with a minimal price. of course they are
most available during the summer months, but it wouldn't hurt to inquire. I
know that George Washington University is near the Smithsonian.
