Jill,

I just happen to be a librarian watching your list-serv for museum library positions. My understanding that you will have to have another ISBN because it is a 2nd edition any way. I think he is probably correct about ISBN being assigned to printing houses. In cataloging, I noticed that the first part of the numbers are usually very much alike from the same publisher. You can print the same edition but in paperback and get a completely different number. Each book and edition has it's own number. Hope this is some what useful. No expert here :-)

Good luck,
Linda Doerre, M.L.S.

Hi all.

Looking for someone knowledgeable about ISBN numbers. Our institution
published a book about 10 years ago with a printer who got our ISBN
number for us. The curator and I have recently re-edited/revised the
book (we're calling it the 2nd edition). We sent out for bids last week
for printing.

In doing our bids, we sent out to the guy who printed it for us before.
He says that if we use another printer, we must get another ISBN number
because that's "his" number. Anyone know about this?

And he's probably the cheaper printer, but I really don't want to use
him though because he basically makes photocopies and binds them...

Anyone out there know about ISBNs?

Thanks in advance!
Jill Dixon
