Some years ago I asked one of the legal staff at Heritage Canada if there
was legislation in Canada in any form which was equivalent to the
legislation that exists in many American states regarding old loans.
Typically the American legislation permits repositories such as museums to
claim title to works of art or other artifacts that have been in their
custody for over 50 years without anyone making any claim to them. The
answer was a resounding NO, and I suspect it is still the case ...

Subject: Old Loans

I'm sure that a lot of you have had to wrestle with this problem in the
past, and I hope you would be willing to share how you resolved the issue.
I have a copy of A Legal Primer on Managing Museum Collections and although
the relevant section is very informative, it obviously refers to US
legislation. Does anyone know whether there is any legislation in Canada
pertaining to old loans? Any information or advice is appreciated.

Thanks
