We used rug felt on the floor/carpet to protect, then put rug (runners) over
them to protect the floor/carpets.  Worked great!  You then need extra
runners to replace those which are
soiled.  There is not much curling of the carpet runners if you place the
end of one runner
over the end of the other one as you go.
