Karla,
I would echo what David Haberstich said about historical societies.
Most smaller institutions - especially historical societies - have
both archival and artifact collections, and the staff is usually small
enough that you are responsible for both. From my experience,
if only one person is taking care of both collections, standardization
in procedure, numbering, care, etc. is not only possible, but necessary.

If you're interested in that route, you might look into museum studies
programs that have archival courses or an archival component.
If I remember correctly from my own grad school application period
(well over 10 years ago now), Duquesne Univ. in Pittsburgh, and the
Univ. of South Carolina both offered such a degree. I'm sure others
on this list can offer additional ideas.
