Another consideration I haven't seen mentioned yet is the conflict that
might arise from a curator purchasing an item that he/she has reason to
believe will increase in value because of an upcoming purchase or exhibit by
his/her museum. Or, an appearance of conflict might exist if the curator
decides to mount an exhibition by a relatively unknown artist that the
curator already collects. The artist's work increases in value, and the
curator appears to have used his/her position to increase the value of a
personal collection.
