March 15, 2002 (Washington, DC) The Museum Trustee Association (MTA) and the
Getty Leadership Institute (GLI) have entered a three-year collaboration
aimed at strengthening North American museums by bringing together trustees
and directors for annual assemblies where they can carefully examine the
critical issues confronting the field and emerging strategies for handling
them. These forums will be held each year in different locations, beginning
October 11-12, 2002, in San Diego. Using case studies, small group
discussions and selected readings, Assembly 2002 will examine changing
patterns in philanthropy, the lure and risks of entrepreneurship, tensions
among the values guiding institutional decisions and other challenging
questions.

"This is a remarkable opportunity for the Getty Leadership Institute,"
according to GLI head, Philip Nowlen. "The Museum Trustee Association
includes museums of all kinds, sizes and regions. Bringing people with such
energy and focus together is both exciting and very useful," Nowlen said.
Andrew L. Camden, MTA board chairman and trustee, the Detroit Institute of
Arts, considers "Working with the Getty Leadership Institute is a wonderful
prospect. GLI's Museum Management Institute has been 'a must' for museum
directors for more than twenty years. Our collaboration with the Getty will
continue the intellectual dialogue between trustees and directors which MTA
began at Harvard University last fall with the groundbreaking format and
content of Assembly 2001."

The Museum Trustee Association, a national non-profit organization founded
in 1986, is dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of museum governance
and leadership. The MTA provides resources, programs and tools that address
the major issues facing museum leaders throughout North America in areas
such as strategy, policy, ethics, inclusion, sustainability and stewardship.
The MTA is located in Washington, D.C.

The Getty Leadership Institute offers the field's leaders professional
development opportunities with a view toward strengthening both museum
professionals and their institutions. Through GLI, trustees, scholars,
philanthropists, public officials and museum leaders come together to pose,
question and sometimes reframe issues of significance. It is located at the
Getty Center in Los Angeles, California.

Assembly 2002 will be held on October 11 and 12 at the U.S. Grant Hotel, San
Diego, California. For further information contact the Museum Trustee
