First, read Tony Poderis' response on this very
subject of a week ago. Tony is an absolute
subject-matter expert and has a wealth of resources
relational to the subject of development. You can
find his response in the archives by clicking on the
FAQ that is indicated at the end of each Museums list
note.

Then, go to http://www.charitychannel.com/forums Sign
onto the Grants list. Read the archives there on
commission.

This is a dog-chasing it's tail debate that resurfaces
regularly. I know of one grant-writing professional
who admits to taking commission, and she was "stiffed"
by a client about a year ago, so I don't know if she
has rethought her position on this.

More and more, certification and memberships are key
tools to gaining access to jobs in the development
field. If one works on a commission basis, they are
precluded from membership in the organizations for
development, and I believe some schools also frown
upon this as well.

I could argue the commission v. noncommission thing
both ways. But what funder wants to think that 10% of
their funding dollars are going to the person who
wrote the grant? Further, since only a percentage of
the sought-after grants are successful, how is your
development professional to be compensated for his/her
work product? There are so many factors that go into
the selection criteria that presuming they have done a
poor work product is simply a fallacy.

When I took Grant Writing at UCLA two years ago, I was
told the going hourly rate for a grant writer in the
US was between $25 and $350 an hour.
