ABOUT THE AREA: a community of 59,000, Des Plaines is located
approximately 15 miles north of Chicago, minutes from O'Hare airport, and
is readily accessible by expressway and train from surrounding
communities.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM: The museum is currently located in a 1906/07 Queen Anne
style house, one-time home of local hardware merchant Benjamin F. Kinder.
Acquired by the Society in 1968, the museum included period rooms,
archives and office space, changing exhibit gallery and archival
materials exhibit area. In summer, 1999, the Society also acquired the
building just north of the current facility, and during late 2001 the
archives and primary exhibit gallery were moved there. A spring 2002
opening is planned for the facility. An extensive restoration of the
house is in progress.

The museum is supported through an Interlocal Agreement between the Des
Plaines Park District, City of Des Plaines and the Des Plaines Historical
Society with funding from all three sources. The combined 2002 budget is
$250,000.00; staff, including Community Outreach Coordinator, stands at
four full-time museum trained professionals and two part-time support
staff. In addition, volunteer work force accumulates approximately 3,500
hours annually. The Board of Trustees is comprised of fifteen (15)
members including an appointed liaison member from the City and Park
District.

Since 1967, the Society has collected over 11,000 three dimensional
objects, 11,000 photographs, and approximately 40,000 pieces of paper
ephemera relating to Des Plaines making the archives one of the best in
the area and an excellent facility for research related to local history
programming.

In an effort to achieve the highest museum standards possible and provide
quality programming, the historical society has participated in various
Museum Assessment Program (MAP) grants, a Conservation Assessment Program
grant and Illinois State Museum/Illinois Department Natural Resources
Museum Operating grants. This historical society is currently
participating in a MAP Public Dimension Assessment.

The historical society sponsors a number of preservation workshops,
programs and speakers at various locations throughout the year. Special
events include an ice cream social, holiday programs and theatre in the
house. The historical society received a "Certificate of Commendation"
from the American Association for State and Local History for "outreach
efforts that more broadly serve their community" at the 1996 conference,
and has received various awards for its publications, programs and
exhibits.
