We have something similar as well at the museum I work with, but sometimes
people seem to want to be illiterate and touch the artifacts anyway.

We do however emphasize wearing gloves while touching objects when we give a
tour, especially to school-age children. It helps them understand a little,
especially if they come up for the reason why we wear the gloves on their
own.
