I volunteered at The Tech doing prospect research for about a year (while
working in another curatorial/exhibits museum job) before applying for and
being hired for a Grants Coordinator job here. As part of my own
professional development, I had determined that I needed fundraising
experience. I honestly had not been thinking about WORKING in development.
Given my aspirations to lead a museum organization, I knew I needed to know
more and my own institution was fully supported by its parent institution.
Volunteering was a great way to develop some real experience, learn how
fascinating fundraising can be, and - yes - get to know my future employers.

I've also known many people over the years who turned volunteer work into
museum careers - many here at The Tech.
