I think the most important thing a manager can remember is LET PEOPLE DO THEIR
JOBS. You are there to make sure that the only thing your employees have to
worry about is doing their jobs. Be willing to take bullets for your employees
and to be a firewall between them and the people higher up on the food chain
and they will be willing to do anything for you. Keep tabs on how they are
doing not to look over their shoulders but to see if you can do anything to
make their jobs easier.

This doesn't mean that employees should have carte blanche to do whatever they
feel like, but if you have someone who is a good worker and gets things done on
time, leave them alone. If someone isn't getting things done, see what you can
do to help - are they overwhelmed, do they not understand or is something else
interferring in with their work.

Also realise that everyone is different. Some people will feel neglected if you
don't ask how they are doing each day. Others will interpret it as you trying
to control them. Some people will run to you with every little problem; others
won't speak up unless there is a major crisis. Learn how your employees work
best and how you can best work with them.

Deb
