Regarding the National Air and Space Museum's Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center,
now being built at Washington-Dulles International Airport in Northern
Virginia: I haven't been deeply involved in this project yet, but my
impression is that it has not been controversial and that the donor has not
tried to exert any control over content. His generous, no-strings-attached
(to my knowledge) gift of $60 million was the largest single cash donation
in Smithsonian history up to that time (the Behring gift to NMAH topped
it). The Smithsonian Board of Regents voted to name the facility after
him. Other features within the center will have names associated with
donors.
