Seems to me that a group at the planning stage you describe would be better
off steering clear of such a specific topic-is there a link between CJ
Walker and Canton?-not too mention the use of borrowed objects, and instead
concentrate on creating some sort of display/exhibition that explains its
vision, goals, purpose, etc.
Could the group put some of those big ideas on paper and find some visual
way such as conceptual drawings, historical photos to further express and
reinforce its vision. The sooner they start "selling" the project to others
outside their circle, the better.
In situations like the one you describe, I flat out remind non-museum folks
that museums are tough to open and operate and that before jumping in they
ought to seriously discuss and articulate what exactly they are hoping to
do. After doing so, they can ask the $64,000 question, "Is a museum the
right vehicle for our hopes and dreams?" Even putting aside for the moment
the more sobering question of whether or not they can succeed.

We are looking for artifacts that will help tell the
story of Madame Walker, a beautician who became the
first female African-American millionaire. We are
working with members of the African-American community
who are interested in forming their own museum, called
the African-American Cultural Center and Museum,
perhaps adjacent to our property. We are offering
them an exhibition space to introduce their project to
the community. There are no museum people in the
group, so they have big ideas and not a lot of time!
So we are looking for some artifacts to borrow that
would help them out.
