Here in Southern California, the earthquake angle is always a good one to
explore! The California Science Center in Los Angeles has some great stuff-
building foam arches and showing how the arch is a naturally strong
structure - using slot-together sticks to show how a structure built using
triangle shapes is inherently stronger than one using squares. All of these
could be tested on a vibrating 'shake table' to see which held up best, and
longest. It would be relatively simple to replicate by having a teacher
shake the table! The principles, of course, are important and fun to learn
whether you include earthquakes or not.
