For historic site educators/interpreters/managers:
The National Park Service is hosting a three-day conference at the
Garrett-Jacobs Mansion in Baltimore, Maryland on interpreting historic
sites, called
"Spreading the Word: Interpreting National Historic Landmarks",
from April 2-4, 2002. Despite the subtitle, the conference is for all types
of historic sites (NHL or not) and because it's rare to find a workshop just
for historic sites, you might want to take advantage of this--especially
since the $95 registration fee includes all sessions, receptions, breakfasts
and lunches! Among the topics to be discussed are:
* Matching media and message
* Principles of universal design
* Engaging your community
* Curriculum-based programming
* Using oral history as a tool for discovery
* New technology and interpretation
* Dealing with sensitive stories
* Creating compelling content
* Partnership building
* Tip and techniques for effective tours
* Interpreting archaeological sites
* Interpreting historic districts
* Web site development
* Using cable television to promote your historic site
The workshop is co-sponsored by Goucher College, the National Historic
Landmark Stewards Association, the Historic Preservation Education
Foundation, and Preservation Maryland. Edward Linenthal will be Friday's
keynote speaker.
