EDUCATION PROGRAMMER
REPORTS TO:     MANAGER OF CURATORIAL SERVICES

GENERAL SUMMARY:  Responsible for the development, planning, and management
of the education programming of the Museum. Develops, implements, supervises
and evaluates programs whose goals are to enhance public access and
understanding of the Museum's exhibitions, collections and mission.  Employs
a variety of media and techniques in the execution of this position
including educational displays, printed materials, demonstrations, classes,
films, lectures, tours, special events, workshops, teacher training
opportunities, school programs as well as assisting with the training of
tour guides, docents and volunteers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:         Works under the direction of the Manager of
Curatorial Services.  Actively participates in making the museum accessible
to people of all ages and conditions, ethnic and racial backgrounds,
economic status and education.  Disseminates educational materials about the
museum's collections and special exhibitions.  Promotes the Museum as an
integral component of educational experience across the curriculum,
especially in history, social studies, and literature.  Investigates and
experiments with new ideas and approaches to interpretive museum learning
theories to enrich the enjoyment, knowledge, understanding, and the
application of the collections.  Positions the museum to be used by
educators, universities and students on a local and global basis.  Develops
mechanisms to involve the Museum in textbooks, videos and history channels.
Solicits ideas to expand the offerings of the museum.  Selects and develops
educational programming to support circulating and permanent exhibits;
maintains, organizes or presents lectures, workshops and symposia.  Plans,
implements, and supervises outreach programs (youth oriented); may transport
collections and present programs to school children and the public.
Develops and administers special programs for local, national, and
international educational systems and the public.  Conceptualizes and
develops educational programming to support all exhibits; consults on the
educational content of exhibits.  Conducts research on museum issues.
Writes and implements grants for program funding in addition to coordinating
funding with Development.  Provides information on area of expertise to
internal and external customers. Establishes system for special events that
enhance Museum image and program development. Establishes a global museum
network to enhance the programming content and increase the use of Civil
Right leaders, historical figures, and significant data in the Museum
operations and offerings.  Represents the Museum at national and
international conferences and symposia on Civil Rights.  Develops creative
mechanisms for national and international leaders of civil rights to offer
their expertise for the public and patrons of the Museum.  Creates
educational products about the Museum to be marketed to textbook developers
and educators.  Negotiates fees and contracts with performers, lecturers,
artists, vendors and others as required.  Maintains budget for all projects.
Performs public speaking, and speech and script writing services.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise),
which may be assigned from time to time.

TYPICAL WORKING DEMANDS:  Requires the ability to move 20 to 35 lbs on
occasion.  Must be able to operate PC workstation. Requires the ability to
effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Must operate vehicle to
drive to various museum functions.  Duties are performed throughout the
Museum and at various special events.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Majority of work is performed in an office
environment with some work performed outdoors -on occasion.  May be exposed
to confined spaces or heights. Occasionally subjected to chemicals, vapors,
and dust; Bending, stooping, and flexibility needed for creation/maintenance
of exhibits.  Good eye and hand coordination is essential; must be able to
read, write, talk, hear, and see at standard levels.  Must be able to
research funding sources and analyze marketing, education and museum trends.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor's degree in Museum studies, history,
social science, African American Studies or related field, plus two (2)
years of demonstrated and progressive experience in a position of growth and
responsibility or any combination of knowledge and experience which enables
one to perform the essential functions of the position.  Must demonstrate
the ability to work with a diverse audience and support base.  The ability
to organize performance arts programs and initiate creative approaches to
teaching history must be demonstrated.  Knowledge of mission, vision and
philosophy of the Museum and Its collections is needed.  Must have ability
to research materials, develop concepts, interpret data, prepare and
administer grants, budget funding and donor gifts.  Effectively communicate
and possess interpersonal skills including public speaking as well as speech
and script writing.  Must be able to conduct qualitative and quantitative
research and generate program reports as needed.  A minimum of two years of
experience in the supervision of projects and employees is essential.
Demonstrated ability to write curriculum is essential.   Must have valid
Tennessee Driver's license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  May require work on weekends, nights, and holidays to
accommodate heavy visitor or public utilization times.
