"Should museums cater to a small audience of dedicated art lovers, or should they target what they do more broadly, making sure that they pull in the newest neophytes? Does mass appeal preclude profundity of thought about artworks? And, most importantly, can museums sell themselves without simply selling out?
These and other questions will be on the table Tuesday in a panel discussion moderated by NPR's Susan Stamberg. The dialogue itself will take place between artist and critic Joe Shannon and Jim Demetrion, until recently the director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden - a branch of the Smithsonian, currently a lightning rod for all these issues.
