GOVERNOR DAVIS NAMES MEMBER TO THE CALIFORNIA SCIENCE
CENTER
SACRAMENTO

Governor Gray Davis today announced the appointment of
Maria Elena Durazo as a member of the California
Science Center.

Ms. Durazo, 48, of Los Angeles, has been with the
Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union,
AFL-CIO, Local 11 since 1983, serving as President
since 1989. Previously, she was an organizer for the
International Ladies Garment Union from 1978 to 1981.

Ms. Durazo is Vice President of the Los Angeles County
Federation of Labor. She is also the first Latina
elected as General Vice President of the International
Union of Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees. Ms.
Durazo is a former member of the Los Angeles City
Airport Commission, appointed by Mayor Bradley, and
served as a member of Los Angeles City Recreation and
Parks Commission from 1999 to 2001.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree from St. Mary's
College, and a juris doctorate degree from the
People's College of Law.

The Sixth District Agricultural Association, commonly
known as the California Science Center, is a science
and technology educational center with exhibits on
basic science, technology, industrial application,
economics and commerce. The mission of the Center is
to stimulate and nurture interest in science,
mathematics, and technology, to take an
interdisciplinary approach that places them in a
social and cultural context and to provide leadership
within the science education community. Members do not
receive a salary.

This position does not require Senate confirmation.
