I also grew up with the idea of museums in general and
especially museums as churces, shrines, temples a version of a
sacred place. But it was conveyed in a GOOD way; a place
to see beautiful, interesting and thought-provoking things
in a setting that kept the hectic, active pace of the world
--I grew up in NY--at bay. You felt you had the time to
fully take in as much as you wanted, knowing that it you
come back and explore again and again seeing new things and
revisiting favorites. That's the church/temple concept that I
continue to embrace--a relaxing beauty break from the daily
stresses of life.
