Dear Timothy,
This is the oldest intact American Method Filtration Plant and Pumping
Station - it dates to 1882. It is on the State and National Registers of
Historical Sites and is National Landmark Eligible - that nomination is
currently being prepared. It is also a designated "Official Project" of Save
America's Treasures, which means it has been defined as a site that "defines
America." It holds 100 years of intact technology - steam to electricity,
which Robert M. Vogel of the Smithsonian Institution has called "the history
of the Industrial Revolution in one building - steam to electricity."
The cost of saving the site - first phase - which would have the Museum and
Education Center up and Running - is only $6 million. We already have over
$1.3 million being held in escrow to stabilize the site. We have already
id'd another $4.5 million which could be used to preserve the site. The
money, has not been a worry as there is such an enormous response to this
very important national industrial site.

Take a look at our website, and see if you still feel the same way. If this
were just some old brick factory, he might have a point. But at this site,
the American Method of Water filtraiton, which became a national and
international standard was perfected - also the Activated carbon method of
water filtration was invented here in the '20's - it has so many levels of
historical importance, and would make an extraordinary museum and education
center of technology and water.

Saving Industrial sites and technology is one of the most neglected areas in
this country.

THat is why there is a State and National Coalition to save this site which
includes the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Architects
Institute of America (AIA) - both National and New Jersey branch, Society for
Industrial Archeology (SIA),
