I was a docent at the UAFairbanks museum and pressed hard (3 months)for a
job in the pub ed dept. Got it and several other contract jobs for the
museum. My next job in the field was a result of my husband asking if the
program was hiring- and here I am today! It really does help to know
people- any way you can get to know people- and then follow up aggressively
(aggressive does not mean annoying). The best book FOR ANY FIELD is What
color is your parachute?. Read it, know it and get the job (oops-
career)you love.

Funny- I have been turned down for volunteer jobs though- on the basis of
too much experience- how stupid is that?

"Show of hands... how many of
you got a job through volunteer work?"

  - 8 years of free labor and never got hired and I wouldn't be employed now
except for connections made through my graduate advisor. It isn't
volunteering, or experience, it is who you know.
