The list of museums with period rooms is enormous because it's a format
that's been used for so long. For art museums, in addition to the Met,
Brooklyn, and Winterthur, you can add the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Boston
Museum of Fine Arts, DAR Constitution Hall, Minneapolis Institute of Fine
Arts, etc. etc. For historic sites, most of them use period rooms and it
more unusual when they don't. I'm not sure of any sites that purposely
preserve an earlier interpretation--they probably can't afford the space and
I'm sure their visitors would be confused. The most unusual "period rooms"
I've experienced are based entirely on fictional characters, such as the
farm of Anne Shirley of "Anne of Green Gables" fame that is open as a museum
on Prince Edward Island. Talk about confusing!

Subject: Period Rooms

Hi,

I am doing some research on period rooms in museums, and am looking for a
list of museums that have period rooms. I know about the Met, Brooklyn, and
Winterthur...what other museums have period rooms that were installed prior
to 1975?

Also, does anyone know of any historic houses that have "frozen" (completely
or certain rooms) in order to maintain the earlier interpretation as part of
the history?

Thanks,

Melinda Kaufman
