Ann, while I am not an expert in this area, I do know that museums are
increasingly charging loan fees--especially the larger institutions-- to
help defray administrative costs. In fact, the high cost of processing
these loans has caused some institutions to put a moratorium on loans. My
registrar tells me that institutions are charging between $50. and $100. per
piece. She also informed me that the registrar at the Orlando Museum has
assembled some data about this. You may want to contact her.

Subject: Loan Policy

We at the New Brunswick Musuem are reviewing our Loan Policy, and I wonder
if I could ask for some input from the group. I have been hearing recently
about "loan fees". We have never charged a fee for loans to other
institutions. The borrowing institutions usually pay for shipping, crating,
insurance etc. Do other institutions charge a loan fee and if so how do you
arrive at a price?

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions, and if anyone has a Loan
Policy they would be willing to share that would be great.
