Thanks for this email. Walking around my Brooklyn
neighborhood one night a couple weeks ago, a flatbed
truck sped passed me on Flatbush Avenue. The thing it
was carrying was covered in soot, and the soot was
lifting into the air as the truck followed the
traffic. It took me a moment to figure out what the
thing was, and after I put it all together, I realized
it was a sculpture from the WTC: Fritz Koenig's "The
Sphere." Seeing it being hauled off in a mess made me
really sad. At the same time however, I also felt
hopeful for all that might be salvaged and grow
stronger from this tragedy. As always, art has an
ability to inspire complex reflection, and of course,
context makes a difference.

Previous to receiving Indigo's email, I didn't know
the name or creator of this sculpture. I've visited
it several times, but I rarely remember names. The
article says that it is a strong candidate for
restoration; so I guess that's where it was headed the
night I saw it pass on the truck. I hope I get to see
it again some time, as its meaning has dramatically
changed for me now.

It's comforting to see that other people are
considering the losses of many of these inspirations.
