Garnet Ghost Town Visitor Contact and Maintenance Assistant Position

  POSITION TITLE: Visitor Contact and Maintenance Assistant (2 positions)

  LOCATION: Garnet Ghost Town, Montana

 BACKGROUND INFORMATION:  The Garnet Preservation Association is a private, non-profit organization that works cooperatively with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to preserve and maintain the ghost town of Garnet.  Garnet Ghost Town is located in the Garnet Mountains of western Montana.  Currently, the Garnet Preservation Association hires individuals in the summer months to help manage visitor use and maintain Garnet.

In 1895,  Dr. Armistead Mitchell erected a stamp mill to crush local ore and a town formed around the mill.  This town was originally called Mitchell, but in 1897 became known as Garnet.  In 1898, the town was booming with 1000 people, over 31 businesses, and numerous residences.  Now, no one remains except for the Park Ranger, 25 buildings, a few GPA and BLM employees and volunteers, and many visitors.  To learn more about Garnet, visit the website - garnetghosttown.org

  BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Visitor Contact and Maintenance Assistant is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the fee booth and miscellaneous duties in and around Garnet Ghost Town.

Specific duties of this position are: open and close fee booth on a daily basis, collect entrance fees, make change as required, be accountable for cash on a daily basis and also participate in regular fee booth cash tallies in preparation for bank deposits.  Other duties include: interpretation of Garnet=s history, answering visitor questions, leading group tours, assisting with the inventory and curation of artifacts, and assisting in the Visitor Center as required.  This position is also required to participate in light maintenance which includes but is not limited to: cleaning the Fee Booth, Visitor Center, toilet facilities, and other buildings in the Garnet Management Area, conducting light grounds maintenance, assisting with trail maintenance and other duties as assigned.  In addition, each Visitor Contact and Maintenance Assistant will have a special project.  One project will entail assisting the Student Curator with the inventory and curation of historic artifacts.  The other project will be recreation related.

The successful applicants will spend approximately 70% of their time dealing with the public and the remaining 30% on the maintenance of recreation facilities and historic structures.

  DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have good interpersonal skills and enjoy conversing with visitors.  In addition, the applicants should be able to conduct tours, perform light maintenance duties and should be outgoing, energetic, motivated, and able to work well in both a team setting and independently.  Recreation related experience and/or background course work in Recreation Management, History, Cultural Resource Management or Public Relations is desired, but not necessary.

The applicants must maintain a current CPR/first aid card. If the person does not have a current card, training will be provided.


  SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: The majority of the work will be done at Garnet Ghost Town.  Garnet is located approximately 45 miles east of Missoula, Montana.   Access to Garnet is via a gravel road.  Travel to and from Garnet is the responsibility of the applicant.  Pay will be provided at a rate of $7.50 an hour with potential raises depending on performance.

WORK SCHEDULE:  40 hours per week 5 days a week.  Positions are required to work weekends and holidays.  Starting and ending dates can be negotiated to fit the individual's schedule.
