Hello,

I want to thank those who responded to my previous inquiry about defining
arts, heritage, culture, etc. I'd like to follow up with a little more
detail that may generate some more discussion.

I'm interested in current trends and debates regarding broadening the
definition of the "arts" and arts organizations (traditionally opera,
theater, symphony, paintings/sculpture, etc.) to include
non-visual/performance activities (such as cultural heritage organizations,
history museums, children's museums, historical houses, etc.). It would
seem that the issue of definitions would affect arts policy (or cultural
policy--are these interchangeable, or do they imply different things??),
funding strategies, and tourism. I'm curious about this issue after reading
the Tourism Industry Association's study that determined that "heritage
tourism" had a greater economic impact on a locale/region than traditional
"arts tourism."

I welcome your thoughts, insights, personal/professional experiences, etc.

I've not explored all of the suggestions to my previous response, so forgive
me if this post is repetitive for those who already responded.

Thank you!

Amy C. Scrivner
