It's A Swamp Thing Tiny N.C. Town
Wants To Host Swamp Center

The roof on the old schoolhouse leaks, paint is
peeling off the walls, mildew is taking over. But to
residents of this one-stoplight farm town near the
Virginia-North Carolina line, the shuttered school
represents a shot at environmental gold. Backed by
their congresswoman and Gates County leaders, tiny
Sunbury is making a big pitch to convert its aging
landmark into a new headquarters, museum and visitor
center for the neighboring Great Dismal Swamp National
Wildlife Refuge... Predictably, though, the proposal
is rankling many in Virginia, the home of the refuge
since its creation in 1974. It also adds fuel to a
long-burning rivalry between the neighboring states,
which have battled for decades over everything from
water rights to highways to sports franchises.
