The Historical Society is located at historic Fort Omaha, which was
established as a supply fort in 1868 and later became headquarters for the
Department of the Platte. Fort Omaha is a National Register District and
appears much as it did at the turn of the last century. It is occupied by
Metropolitan Community College, which acquired the property from the federal
government in 1975. The Fort has no closing dates on any map, for the
government retained reservation rights and continues to deploy troops from
training areas located on the perimeter of the Fort.

The Douglas County Historical Society, by special arrangement with
Metropolitan Community College, occupies two historic buildings that are
prominent on Officers Row overlooking the parade ground. The General Crook
House was built in 1879 for the Commander of the Department of the Platte,
and bears the name of the Civil War hero, frontier general, Indian War hero
and Indian sympathizer who was Commander at that time. The General Crook
House Museum is an award-winning, authentically restored home, majestic yet
not elaborate, typical of the frontier period. It is furnished in the late
Victorian period (Eastlake) and features the region's only Victorian
Heirloom Garden. It is open to the public every day and is a popular choice
for private events. The Crook House observed is Silver Heirloom Anniversary
(25 years) in 2001.

A second building, an officer's family duplex built in 1884, is located next
to the Crook House and for the past 10 years has served as the Historical
Society's Library/Archives and National Indian Wars Library. The Historical
Society and its Library have been designated the official archive by the
Douglas County Board of Commissioners and its vast collections document the
history of Douglas County and Omaha to back to and prior to the founding of
"Omaha City" in 1854. It is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment on Saturday.

The Historical Society has undergone significant growth through the years
and receives financial support from Douglas County, foundations and private
individuals. It is governed by a Board of Directors, and the current
president is John S. (Jack) Savage, an internationally known architect. The
Historical Society produces an extensive number of services, programs,
educational classes, exhibits and events that are made possible by an
enthusiastic team of staff, Board, volunteers and community participants.
