This thread often comes up among our newer members,
and there is a wealth of information that can be found
in the archives (see the link at the very bottom of
each post). Bookmark the archives and use them for
ready reference.

With that said, every time this question comes up, the
professionals in the field tell us to volunteer,
volunteer, volunteer. That's part of the reason why I
include volunteering and internships (sometimes simply
giving you transferrable skills--and I've branched out
on the jobs section to provide part-time and summer
jobs for those needing to supplement their income).

Search the archives for the Opportunities postings
because I vaguely recall seeing something in NJ
lately.

Networking is the second concept that most
consistently comes up. Invest some money (yes, I
know, it takes money to be able to invest, but . . .)
in some of the professional organizations that were
mentioned last week (see the archives).

Visit the museums in your area for which you have an
interest and see if they have workshops you might
attend on any number of topics. You don't know who
will be there you might make contact with.

Don't overlook fraternal/sorority organizations within
your community. You may find someone in your outings
who may be able to open a door for you.

Here's the line in the Museum-list sigfile that will
send you to the archives:
