Position Description

Title:              Oral Historian / Folklorist
Reports To:         Director of Collections
Appointment:        12 Month Contract

Introduction:
This position is responsible for fieldwork necessary to survey, identify and
document living traditions though oral histories and artifacts related to the
Baltimore & Ohio Railroad at Mt. Clare, Baltimore, Maryland; will work with
Education and Collections Department staff to produce public access and
programs from the resulting fieldwork as well as assisting the Development
Department with the preparation of related grants.  The position is a one
year (12 Month) contract position, renewable for a second year pending
funding with the goal of creating a permanent full or part-time museum staff
position.

Duties:
The incumbent will network with the railroad community and neighborhood
communities to identify, interview and collect stories and artifacts from
former workers and management at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Mt. Clare
Shops. Organize materials and formulate a database for public access; Work
with museum staff in the development of public programs and exhibitions from
collected histories and artifacts;  Work with Archives and Collections staff
to document and preserve artifacts, documents and other material culture
collected during the fieldwork process; Assist the museum's Development
Department in the preparation of a National Endowment for the Humanities
Planning Grant as well as other related grants.

Qualifications:
Applicant will have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in American History,
American Studies, Folklore, Oral history or a related field.  A Master's
Degree or higher is preferred.  Applicant should have the cumulative
experience of, at least, one year in doing community relations, field work,
oral history and / or public programming.  Strong photography and audio
skills are a plus.  The applicant should be able to provide their own
transportation, feel comfortable working in both inner city and suburban
environments and possess a high degree of interpersonal and organizational
skills.  The applicant should be results oriented and able to work
independently and with a team.

Compensation:
The Folklorist/Oral Historian will serve as an independent contractor for a
12 month term at the rate of $30,000.00.  Equipment will be furnished. This
term will include ten (10) days of paid vacation.  The incumbent will be
responsible for all federal and state taxes and other assessments as may be
required.  No other benefits will be provided.  Upon the successful
completion of this term, a second 12 month term may be awarded depending upon
funding.
