Position #: ZRL Indiana University Art Museum seeks a
curator of its Asian art collections,
which consist of an important collection of historic
Indian sculpture as well as significant
collections from Japan, China, Tibet, and Thailand,
including a particularly strong collection of
over 500 Japanese prints. This new, endowed position
will be responsible for the preservation,
exhibition, documentation, research, and publication
of the museum’’s permanent collections of
Asian art; for contributing to the museum’’s special
exhibitions and educational program; for
establishing the needs and priorities for the
development of the Asian collection in keeping with
the musuem's long-range objectives; and for the
general administrative duties and access
procedures related to the use of the Asian collection.
Occasional teaching in art history
department possible, but not required.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Asian art history strongly
preferred (will consider M.A. in art history
with at least 5 years additional professional/academic
experience in Asian art), with primary
specialty in south or southeast Asian art and
secondary specialty in Japanese art preferred.
Reading proficiency in an appropriate Asian language
and demonstrated scholarly writing ability
required. Excellent communication and organizational
skills and ability to work well with a
variety of people are essential. Previous curatorial
or other object-based experience preferred.
