OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GOVERNOR DAVIS PROCLAIMS JANUARY 2002 "CALIFORNIA
MENTORING MONTH"
SACRAMENTO
Governor Davis today proclaimed January 2002
"California Mentoring Month" to recognize how valuable
mentors are in encouraging, motivating and guiding
California's youth.

"Research has shown that mentoring helps to increase
school attendance and decrease involvement with drugs,
alcohol and violent behavior," Governor Davis said.
"California Mentoring Month honors the men and women
who have volunteered their time."

There are more than 400 mentoring programs and 29
mentoring coalitions throughout California that are
committed to building a brighter future for young
people.

"California Mentoring Month" is part of a wider
National Mentor Month and underlines California's
commitment to the mentoring movement.

To become a mentor, or to find a mentoring group in
your area, call 1-888-80-MENTOR.
