October 2001 For Immediate Release
AFA ANNOUNCES PROGRAM FOR DIRECTORS FORUM 2001

The American Federation of Arts' eighth annual Directors Forum, a program
for directors of art museums, takes place in New York City on November 4-6,
2001. The program features sessions led by eminent professionals exploring
a variety of timely subjects, as well as gallery tours and receptions.

The Directors Forum provides a singular occasion for colleagues from art
institutions across the country to meet with one another and with
representatives from the art, business, academic, and museum communities.
Past participants have lauded the AFA for providing this opportunity to
network and reflect on important issues of common concern.

Among the speakers for the 2001 program are Maxwell L. Anderson, director,
Whitney Museum of American Art; James Cuno, Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot
Director, Harvard University Art Museums; Robin J. Ely, visiting associate
professor of organizational behavior, Harvard Business School; Neil G.
Kotler, program specialist, Smithsonian Institution; Arnold L. Lehman,
director, the Brooklyn Museum of Art; Robert Lehrman, chairman of the board
of trustees, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; Malcolm MacKay,
managing director, Russell Reynolds Associates; Marti Mayo, Contemporary
Arts Museum (Houston); and Jock Reynolds, The Henry J. Heinz II Director,
Yale University Art Gallery.

Sessions, to take place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The New-York
Historical Society, will address areas particular to these difficult times:
strategic planning, leadership and governance, and funding challenges.
Directors Forum is supported in part by The Liman Foundation. Christie's,
Harry N. Abrams, Inc. and TIAA-CREF have provided additional support.

The Forum is open to full-time, paid professional directors and acting
directors of not-for-profit art museums or galleries that are open to the
public on a regular schedule, regardless of institutional size.

The 2001 Program Committee includes: Kevin Grogan, Executive Director,
Contemporary Art Center of Virginia; Bruce A. Lilly, Director, Minnesota
Museum of American Art; Terence Pitts, Executive Director, Cedar Rapids
Museum of Art; Janet E. Torno, Executive Director, Birmingham Bloomfield Art
Center.

For more information about the Directors Forum and registration (open until
October 23), please call John W. Nichols, Director of Museum Services, AFA,
