Museums and galleries should tackle social issues like crime, intolerance
and poor health

Museums should act as catalysts for change within their communities by
responding to issues of social exclusion – an idea seen as alien and
abhorrent by some, states a new report from the University of Leicester.

Museum functions like collecting, preserving and displaying should not be
undertaken for their own sake – but as a means to a number of social ends,
the report states.

new publication from the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries,
produced with the support of Re:source: the council for museums, archives
and libraries.

Just published, the 132 page book brings together a range of perspectives
to explore the social role and impact of museums and galleries.
Contributors from a wide range of museums and galleries explore the
relevance of the social inclusion agenda for all aspects of museum practice
from collections management and conservation to exhibitions and education.
The book will help museum professionals to engage with the fluid and
shifting concept of social inclusion and to develop inclusive practice
throughout the museum.
